William (Bill) Gillin

A300 Captain William (Bill) Gillin #231875 (seniority #1234), will be retiring from FedEx Express on November 2, 2016. His final flight will be FDX 0428 PHX-MEM on the morning of November 1, 2015, scheduled to arrive at 1130LBT.

Bill would like to share the following:

"When I had the privilege of meeting Capt. Elrey Jeppesen about 25 years ago, he smiled and shook my hand. I suppose he also shook Orville Wright’s hand when Orville signed Jepp’s first pilot license. Back when Jepp flew his open-cockpit Curtiss Jenny, I doubt he could have imagined the kind of flying we routinely do. Reflecting back on that meeting with Capt. Jepp makes me aware of just how recently in human history we have had the wonderful opportunity to fly big jets around the world.

I’m grateful to have had a career flying for FedEx, and I’m honored to have worked with so many professionals. I’m thankful for all who have made this possible: Rich Fazio for his recommendation, all the captains who set a good example, the first officers who kept us out of trouble, and our excellent instructors who made training less painful while imparting valuable lessons. Thanks also to the folks behind the scenes who keep things running!

My wife Kathy and I are looking forward to retirement in Bozeman, Montana, with lots of fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, and spending time at the family ranch. If any of you find yourself in the area, give me a holler and we’ll make time for a brew of your choice (java or micro-) and maybe sightseeing as well.

Godspeed and keep up the good work.
Bill Gillin

A Man with a Mammogram: Pilot Shares Struggle with Breast Cancer

September 29, 2016

You have cancer.

Per the National Cancer Institute, nearly 40% of men and women will hear those words at some point during their lifetimes.

Mac Holmes first heard it in 2012. It was what came next that shocked him the most.

“My doctor told me I had to go get a mammogram,” said Mac, a FedEx pilot. “I remember my wife Robin and I looked at each other in disbelief. A man with a mammogram?”

Mac Holmes QuoteMac spent 28 years in the Air Force as a Squadron Commander and has been with FedEx since 1993. He’s flown all over the world, from São Paulo to Singapore, cherishing every moment. He’s seen it all, or at least he thought he had.

When Mac found out he had breast cancer, he was stunned. Male breast cancer accounts for less than one percent of all breast cancer cases, according to the

Bob Etherton

After 44 years of flying, starting in Piper Cherokees, retiring as a U.S. Naval Aviator, and now retiring as a FedEx pilot, it is time to downgrade to a Second Class medical, and look to little airplanes once again for new flying adventures.

A farewell FCIF from years ago still sticks in my mind, and that retiring pilot said it so well that I’ll just repeat it here.  He wrote, “I wondered how I would know when it’s time to retire?  Then I realized that when I was a work, I was thinking about home; and when I was at home, I wasn’t thinking about work – It’s time!”

It is time.  It has been a lot of fun, but, there is new fun to be had in General Aviation.  And, in playing my guitar(s).  And in spending time with my bride and family.

There are, of course, many people very worthy of thanks for their contributions to my FedEx career, but there is one person in particular to whom I owe special thanks for steering my career toward this happy conclusion…

Big Dave Wright was my Sponsor, and he is a very good friend.  I intend to repay him in part with some nicely grilled steaks, and beverages of his choice from time to time.  He is also a good friend and strong supporter of all FedEx pilots, and it would be quite appropriate if he never had to pay for any drinks during the remainder of his career here at FedEx.  Thank you Dave.

For all of you, I wish you a long, wonderful career that is as good or better than I’ve had.  Try never to lose sight of the magic of flying airplanes – that spark that prompted you to choose aviation way back when you first started in this profession.  Keep it alive.  Be professional, of course, but don’t forget to have fun too.  My First Officers will likely remember my common briefing item: The goal is to complete this flight with no bent metal; no flight violations; and to say that we had fun doing it.

Lastly, as you depart the airplane at the end of a long, tiresome flight…  Consider taking the time to square your tie, put a smile on your face, and acknowledge the ground crew personnel working around your airplane.  They do smile back, and they appreciate it when we notice them.

Adios, Y’all!
